Support our partner's swimming pool construction project at Lake Bunyonyi in Western Uganda

20/07/2024

In western Uganda, around 40 people drown in Lake Bunyonyi each year. To help prevent these tragedies, our key partners—the Planetrise Association, the Planetrise Foundation, and the Jane Goodall Institute—have launched a joint project, supported by MÖL – the Hungarian Volunteer League Association and Hungary Helps.

The project is being carried out with the support and consent of the local community, as their involvement is essential for effective implementation.

The aim is to create an enclosed swimming area that provides a safe space for children to learn to swim—ideally with the help of a local instructor.

Planning and material procurement took place in May and June, and by early July construction of the circular floating platform began. The structure meets the intended purpose, and swimming lessons will soon commence. The construction project is led by Wiberforce Wama, who recruits and manages local workers. Much gratitude and thanks to him!

We hope that after the swimming team is established, Uganda's very first water polo team will also be formed. Exciting challenges lie ahead!
